New Zealand author Eleanor Catton won the 2013 Man Booker prize for English fiction on Tuesday for her novel "The Luminaries", to become the youngest winner in the award's 45-year history.   The 28-year-old novelist poked fun at the size of her 848-page tome about the 19th century New Zealand gold rush and thanked British publishers Granta for their patience.   "I've actually just had to buy a new handbag because my old handbag wasn't big enough to fit my ...

Oct 16th 2013, 17:12

A survey of Americans shows that only about half of them think it is "absolutely essential" to increase the country's borrowing authority by Thursday to avert a default on U.S. debts, while more than a third think the country can go past the deadline without major economic problems. The Pew Research Center said it surveyed more than 1,500 Americans in recent days, with 51 percent saying the country's $16.7 trillion debt ceiling should be increased so the U.S. can continue to ...

Underwater Wi-Fi Could Provide 'Deep-Sea Internet'
Oct 16th 2013, 17:06, by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)

Researchers at the University of Buffalo in New York are developing an underwater wireless network they're dubbing a "deep-sea" Internet. If successful, it could lead to improvements in tsunami detection, offshore oil and natural gas exploration, surveillance, pollution monitoring and other activities. "A submerged wireless network will give us an unprecedented ability to collect and analyze data from our oceans in real time," said Tommaso Melodia an associate professor of electrical ...

Kenya's Rhinos Getting Microchips to Deter Poachers
Oct 16th 2013, 17:29

Kenyan wildlife officials have begun inserting microchips into rhinos in a bid to combat poachers, who kill the animals for their horns. Officials say the chips and accompanying scanners will allow them to track the rhinos. The chips will also help authorities link recovered or confiscated horns to poaching cases. The Kenyan Wildlife Service received the equipment from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). WWF Kenya spokesman Robert Magori says each rhino will have a chip implanted in its body and ...

U.S. Senate leaders have crafted a last-minute deal to reopen the federal government and avoid a U.S. default likely to have harmful effects on the global economy. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the deal Wednesday. Reid said both sides set aside their differences so the country could avoid financial "disaster." Nigerian Eid Feast Bridges Divides
Oct 16th 2013, 14:32, by webdesk@voanews.com (Heather Murdock)

On Eid al-Adha, Muslims slaughter an animal for their supper but most of the meat is required by Islam to be distributed to relatives, friends and the poor.  In Kaduna, Nigeria, a city known for hostilities between Christians and Muslims, some clerics are celebrating the holiday and trying to bridge the divide by distributing the meat together to the disabled.  At one residence, about 200 Muslims are dining on a cow, slaughtered properly by a Muslim for Eid al-Adha -- the ...
