July 6, 2013.  San Francisco, California.  An Asiana Airlines captain flies the plane in for a visual approach, without automated control.  The National Transportation Safety Board's Deborah Hersman says it came in too low and too slow.    "About five seconds later and about three seconds before impact, there is a call for a go-around [aborted landing]. Coming in too low on a sunny July day, Asiana Flight 214 broke apart after hitting a seawall on approach to the San Francisco airport.  The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.    NTSB Chair Deborah Hersman told reporters Asiana 214 pilots reported they had the airport in sight and that they were cleared for the visual approach.   A visual approach means the pilot is expected to land manually - without the help of the Boeing 777's advanced ...

Smithsonian, Argonne Team Up to Save Earliest Known Photographs
Aug 15th 2013, 20:31, by webdesk@voanews.com (Kane Farabaugh)

The introduction of the daguerreotype in the 19th century ushered in the era of modern photography. Instead of sitting long hours for an artist to paint a portrait, customers could sit for just a few minutes while their true likeness was captured in what is now known as a photograph. Research scientists at the Smithsonian Institution are teaming up with physicists at Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago to study these earliest known photographs, which are in danger of being lost ...

Cameroon Opposition Says Biya Manipulating Elections
Aug 15th 2013, 19:43, by webdesk@voanews.com (Moki Edwin Kindzeka)

Cameroon's Supreme Court is indicating it will not follow election laws that give it 10 days to rule on complaints and petitions concerning next month's parliamentary and council elections.  Opposition political leaders charge that President Paul Biya's party is manipulating rules to ensure it stays in power.  Consistent inconsistencies have so far marred the electoral calendar in Cameroon. First, the mandates of parliamentarians and councilors were extended several ...
