DRC Official Rejects Rebel Demand for Kabila Resignation
Jul 29th 2012, 23:54

The Democratic Republic of Congo's Information Minister has rejected demands by the M23 rebel group that President Joseph Kabila resigns before any peace negotiations could proceed. "Nobody proposed to those killers any negotiations, nobody. We have asked for an evaluation of the whole process of this peace agreement of 2009, in order to bring evidence that there is no reason at all for anybody to rebel and be killing our people," said Lambert Mende. "This is also to bring evidence ...

Jul 29th 2012, 17:41

Mali's interim president is expected to address his nation on Sunday night, two days after returning to a country steeped in unrest and political uncertainty. The address will mark the first time President Dioncounda Traore speaks to Malians since being severely beaten by protesters two months ago. After the attack, Traore flew to France for medical treatment. He returned to Bamako Friday evening. Traore was given the task of returning the country to civilian rule following a March ...

North Korea says torrential rains spawned by a typhoon have caused at least 88 deaths and 134 injuries, and have left thousands homeless. The North's official Korean Central News Agency reported Saturday that more than 5,000 homes were destroyed or damaged and nearly 63,000 people were left homeless by flooding that began on July 18. About 4,800 hectares of cropland were washed away when typhoon Khanun swept through North Korea on July 23 and 24. The KCNA warned of more heavy rains on ...

Nigeria, Tunisia Tip Off London Olympic Men's Basketball

LONDON — In the opening game of Olympic men's basketball competition, Nigeria edged African rival Tunisia Sunday, 60-56. Both African teams were making their debuts in Olympic men's basketball. It looked like Nigeria, faster, stronger and quicker to the ball, was headed for an easy victory over Tunisia. "D'Tigers" of Nigeria led by as many as 19 points in the first half and took a 31-15 lead into the break. But the Tunisians, the reigning African champions, rallied in ...

Thousands March in Tokyo Against Nuclear Power
Jul 29th 2012, 11:58

Thousands of people in Tokyo have marched on Japan's parliament to demand a ban on nuclear power. The demonstrators encircled the Diet building Sunday evening with candlelight in a peaceful rally to demand the government of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda abandon nuclear power.  Two reactors were restarted earlier this month, despite safety worries after the multiple meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant last year. All 50 working reactors in Japan went offline in May for ...
