US to Use Romanian Airbase for Afghan Pullout
Oct 18th 2013, 22:59

Romania has agreed to allow the U.S. military to use an air base near the Black Sea as a key logistics hub for getting supplies and troops into and out of Afghanistan. Pentagon officials said the agreement reached Friday will allow them to move their operations away from Kyrgyzstan, where lawmakers had voted not to renew the U.S. lease at Manas airbase beyond July 2014. The United States is working on pulling out most of its combat forces and equipment from Afghanistan by the end of next ...

Split Grows Within US Republican Party
Oct 18th 2013, 21:56, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jim Malone)

Public opinion polls show that Republicans have been damaged in the aftermath of the partial shutdown of the U.S. government. Conservative Tea Party supporters in Congress backed the shutdown in a failed hope to undermine President Barack Obama's controversial health care reform law. It appears to be a widening split within the Republican Party that could hinder compromise with Democrats on a range of budget issues. Vice President Joe Biden greeted federal workers in Washington, back on the ...

Google Stock Price Rises Above $1,000
Oct 18th 2013, 23:35

The stock price of the Google Internet search engine reached $1,000 for the first time on Friday, as investors bet the firm will continue to dominate the mobile and video advertising business. The price rose after the company reported better than expected earnings for the third quarter. Google is the world's largest search company and advertisers pay to put their sales pitches near search results and other high traffic areas. Much of the activity on the Internet is shifting from ...

Defiant Senator Cruz Not Opposed to Second Shutdown
Oct 18th 2013, 21:35, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jeff Seldin)

The political crisis that forced a partial shutdown of the U.S. government is over; government agencies are open for business again and, instead of running out of money, the government is paying its bills.  But at least one of the lawmakers who helped lead the shutdown-charge is signaling the fight is far from done, even if it means forcing a shutdown all over again. At the height of the U.S. shutdown fight, before protesters started throwing down barricades blocking a war memorial, ...
