Jan 23rd 2013, 14:55

A medication for multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, bedaquiline, will soon become available in South Africa after being preliminarily cleared by the U.S. drug authority. The prospect is welcomed by health groups who say there is a growing need for treatment in the nation with one of the world's highest HIV rates, and where TB is often the major cause of death. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the French and West African fight against Islamist militants in northern Mali is part of a necessary struggle against global terrorism.  Clinton said the military campaign against al-Qaida affiliated terrorists in northern Mali is crucial to denying them a staging area from which to launch attacks across Africa's Sahel region.
