Syria to Overshadow Meeting of World's Economic Powers in Russia
Sep 4th 2013, 23:03, by webdesk@voanews.com (James Brooke)

Leaders of the Group of 20 nations started meeting five years ago at the height of the economic crisis. Now, with the banking crisis apparently under control, politics may overtake this year's annual meeting of the G-20. Jobs and global economic growth are the topics of the two-day meeting of 20 world leaders that begins Thursday in St. Petersburg. The leaders represent 80 percent of the world's economy. But this year's meeting threatens to be hijacked by debate over a country that accounts ...

Obama Orders Veterans' Benefits Extended to Same Sex Married Couples
Sep 4th 2013, 23:15, by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)

U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered veterans' benefits extended to same sex married couples. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder wrote in a letter to Congress that the provision of veterans' benefits laws that defines marriage as between a man and a woman will "cease." Holder wrote that the Supreme Court's decision declaring the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional also should have applied to veterans' benefits, even if the court did not directly address that ...

September 4 through the 14 mark the main Jewish High Holiday season when Jews all over the world undergo 10-days of self-reflection, repentance, music and prayer. The holidays begin on Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, and end with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Traditional High Holiday music and liturgy is often hundreds of years old, and older. But some of those traditions are being reshaped by a younger generation of Jews who want to put their own mark on their ancient ...

The U.S. space agency, NASA, has narrowed down the potential landing sites for a 2016 mission to Mars to four locations. Twenty-two sites were originally considered for the mission, which the scientists are calling the Interior Exploration Using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) lander. Tunisia's Opposition Threatens Protests After Talks Fail
Sep 4th 2013, 21:38, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Tunisia's secular opposition threatened on Wednesday to launch more mass protests to force the Islamist-led government to step down, saying negotiations to end a political stand-off had failed. Hamma Hammami, a senior leader in a coalition of more than a dozen secular opposition parties agitating for new elections, blamed the Islamist Ennahda party heading the government coalition for the collapse of two weeks of mediated talks. The talks aimed to lead to new polls that analysts say the ...

Australia's Abbott Set to Inherit Economy Others Would Envy
Sep 4th 2013, 21:48, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Australia's presumptive prime minister, Tony Abbott, is set to  inherit a slowing economy, rising unemployment and a budget in the red. Yet look out to a three-year election horizon, and the view is a lot better.   Abbott's conservative Liberal-National coalition appears to be a shoe-in at elections this weekend, ending six years of Labor rule, and all the talk has been of the challenges he faces.   Chief among those are worries about a substandard economy and the ...

Senate Panel OKs Military Strike on Syria
Sep 4th 2013, 22:10

A key U.S. Senate panel has voted in favor of a possible military strike against Syria. The Foreign Relations Committee voted 10 to 7 Wednesday to give President Barack Obama the authority to take military action against Syria for using chemical weapons on civilians. The Senate resolution calls for limited action lasting no more than 90 days. It says no U.S. soldier would be put on the ground - an assurance to lawmakers who do not want the United States to become embroiled in another ...
