During this Islamic holiday season of Eid, many Turks are booking a new kind of accommodation: an Islamic, or Halal Hotel. The popular Bodrum resort has begun catering to the country's increasingly affluent pious-Muslim  population. At first glance the Sultan Beach Hotel near the Turkish resort of Bodrum appears like any other seaside hotel with its swimming pool, sun chairs, and people sipping cool drinks. But on closer examination there are no women to be seen by the pool and not a ...

As fighting drags on in Syria, the Turkish government continues to stand behind its campaign to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. But, domestic opposition is growing against the government's Syria position and Turkey's acceptance of waves of Syrian refugees. There is discontent on the streets of Istanbul, Turkey's most metropolitan city. Concern Grows Among Iranians After US Debate Remarks
Oct 24th 2012, 16:50

Iran was mentioned nearly 50 times during this week's U.S. presidential debate, more than Afghanistan, Iraq and even China. The fact wasn't lost on Iranians, many of whom watched the debate with interest and concern about the strained relations between the two countries. Ali, an Iranian political activist, said he doesn't feel good about what has been going on in the U.S. presidential season. "I feel like [Iran] has replaced al-Qaeda in U.S. election campaigns," said Ali, whose last name is ...

Chinese authorities are offering reward money in an attempt to put an end to self-immolation protests by ethnic Tibetans.  Officials in Kanlho Prefecture announced Wednesday a reward of about $8,000 to anyone who informs about anyone planning to set themselves on fire. The announcement also promised a reward of about $30,000 to anyone who gives any creditable information about the most recent self-immolations. At least three Tibetans have set themselves on fire to protest Chinese rule ...

With rampant wildcat strikes continuing in South Africa's mining sector, and with mines firing tens of thousands of strikers, how are companies staying afloat?  Welcome to the world of labor brokering -- companies that find contract workers to fill gaps. Unions have fought to outlaw the practice of labor brokering, but the brokers say they fill a critical role in a nation with strict labor laws and an unskilled workforce.  South Africa's Gold Fields mining company fired 8,500 ...

Scholars David Smock and Daniel Serwer have been trying to talk people into peace as international mediators for much of their careers. At a recent book launch in Washington, D.C for their new publication, called "Facilitating Dialogue: USIP's Work in Conflict Zones," Smock and Serwer analyzed why peace talks in places such as Iraq, Kosovo, and Nepal were successful. One factor, they say, is simply time. "It isn't just a one-meeting effort. The most effective processes take a ...
