Oct 3rd 2013, 22:19, by webdesk@voanews.com (Cindy Saine)

In the midst of bitter budget debate over funding the federal government, Washington police officials say a car tried to ram a White House barricade and was chased by police cars toward the U.S. Capitol building. Reports say the female driver of the car injured a police officer in the crash and that police fired guns at her. On day three of a government shutdown triggered by political deadlock, debate in the U..S. Capitol was temporarily shut down by a security scare.  The Capitol and ...

Frustrations Build As US Government Shutdown Drags On
Oct 3rd 2013, 21:40, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jeff Seldin)

For many in the United States, life goes on, for now, as it always has despite the government shutdown.  But even for those who aren't  feeling any impact, there's a sense things are not normal.  In Washington, some things seem normal - like people walking on the National Mall, commuters making their way into work. But monuments and other attractions are closed. Streets are emptier. Commuter trains are less crowded - Metrorail is tweeting that ridership is down 20 ...

Tunisian Extradited to US Over Bomb Plot
Oct 3rd 2013, 22:47

A Tunisian national has been extradited to the United States to face charges that he conspired to carry out a suicide bomb attack against Americans in Europe. Nizar Trabelsi was arrested in Belgium on September 13, 2001, two days after the terror attacks in the U.S. Washington has long sought his extradition, suspecting him of also being behind a more devastating Al-Qaida plot. A federal indictment unsealed Thursday says the 43-year-old Trabelsi met in the spring of 2001 with al-Qaida leader ...

Conflict Brews in Cuba Over Sales Ban of Imported Goods
Oct 3rd 2013, 21:13, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

The Cuban government appeared headed for its first serious clash with the island's newly created "non-state" sector of small businesses over a prohibition on the sale of imported clothing and other goods.   The decree issued last week potentially affects some 20,000 small businesses and their employees who sell clothing, hardware and other goods brought in informally by travelers, some of whom visit the Caribbean island regularly carrying merchandise from the United States, Spain and ...

Oct 3rd 2013, 21:24, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

The leader of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn party was remanded in custody on Thursday pending trial on criminal charges, the first time an elected party chief has been put behind bars since a military coup nearly five decades ago.   The detention of Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, who has watched support for his party wane after a supporter was accused of murdering a popular rapper, is a reprieve for Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's government that has vowed to wipe out the party, calling ...

Oct 3rd 2013, 20:39, by webdesk@voanews.com (Scott Stearns)

U.S. officials say the partial government shutdown is delaying security upgrades to embassies abroad and cutting staff in offices that monitor sanctions against Iran. Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf says the shutdown is delaying training for Diplomatic Security agents and has put on hold embassy security upgrades including new construction, major renovations and new leases. Shortened Obama Asia Trip Highlights Economic Goals, Strategic Pivot
Oct 3rd 2013, 20:51, by webdesk@voanews.com (Dan Robinson)

President Barack Obama is scheduled to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Bali, Indonesia, and the East Asia summit in Brunei. But there are concerns he may cancel the trip to deal with the shutdown of the U.S. government. Regional political analysts say the president's appearance at the gatherings is important. Last year, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton represented the United States at APEC. But attendance by a U.S. president is important, especially ...
