Jury Dismisses Michael Jackson Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Oct 2nd 2013, 23:17

A jury in the U.S. state of California has found that concert promoters were not liable in the wrongful death lawsuit brought by family members of music icon Michael Jackson. The jury agreed that concert promoters AEG Live hired Dr. Conrad Murray to look after Jackson before a London concert series in 2009. But the jury ruled that Murray was not unfit for the job, one of the requirements for the lawsuit to succeed. The verdict, read Wednesday, capped a five-month trial that ended with three ...

Obama: Fed Chair Will Prevent Asset Bubbles, Focus on Jobs
Oct 2nd 2013, 22:28, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

President Barack Obama said on Wednesday the person he selects to head the Federal Reserve when Chairman Ben Bernanke's term ends in January will prevent asset bubbles from forming and try to bring down the unemployment rate.   "They're going to be making sure that they keep an eye on inflation, that they're not encouraging some of the bubbles that we've seen in our economy that have resulted in busts," Obama said in an interview on CNBC.   "But they're also ...

White House Fiscal Talks Yield Varying Expectations
Oct 2nd 2013, 21:57, by webdesk@voanews.com (Michael Bowman)

President Barack Obama met with congressional leaders of both parties for the first time since a partial U.S. government shutdown began earlier this week. Expectations for the meeting varied greatly among Democratic and Republican lawmakers, who remain deadlocked on extending federal funding. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner emerged from White House talks to say that President Barack Obama again refused to negotiate with them to end a government shutdown. After more than an ...

Asia Grain 'Mountains' Swell as Governments Fret Over Food Security
Oct 2nd 2013, 22:18, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Towering grain mountains in Asia, already large enough to feed China for eight months, are set to grow even bigger as governments persist in shoring up their safety buffers against hard times.   Haunted by a 2008 food crisis that sparked unrest and panic buying, states will keep piling grain into reserves despite the strain on their finances and storage problems, buoying prices that have been hit by expectations of bumper harvests.   "The most populated countries, especially in ...

Powerful Volcanoes Raise New Questions About Ancient Mars
Oct 2nd 2013, 22:39, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Ancient Mars was home to giant volcanoes capable of eruptions a thousand times more powerful than the one that shook Mount St. Helens in 1980, scientists said on Wednesday.   The finding raises fresh questions about conditions on Mars in its early years, a time when scientists believe the planet was much more Earth-like with a thick atmosphere, warmer temperatures and water on its surface.   Major volcanic eruptions likely would have triggered climate shifts that toggled Martian ...

For days, Democrats repeatedly have stated they will not negotiate with Republicans on the fiscal impasse as long as Republicans have partisan stipulations for reopening the federal government. Kenyan Makes 900-Km US Trek to Fight Elephant Poaching
Oct 2nd 2013, 19:59, by webdesk@voanews.com (Pamela Dockins)

Jim Nyamu is a man on a mission. With Kenyan flag in hand, he has spent the past month crossing the northeastern United States on foot, stopping along the way to tell people how a growing demand for elephant ivory, especially in Asia, has fueled an increase in poaching that could drive some elephant populations to extinction.   Why United States? Because Americans, Nyamu says, aren't aware of the severity of the problem.   "Many people ask me the same question: '[Why ...

US Government Shutdown Complicates Obama Asia Travel
Oct 2nd 2013, 21:56, by webdesk@voanews.com (Dan Robinson)

A trip that President Barack Obama is scheduled to take to Asia has been cut short by the continuing stalemate between the White House and Republicans over the U.S. government shutdown.  Shutdown politics continue to play out on Capitol Hill, and Obama called congressional leaders to the White House late Wednesday to discuss ways of finding a quick exit from the impasse. The president was forced to cancel stops in Malaysia and the Philippines, phoning Prime Minister Najib Razak and ...
