Nearly 6,000 Dead Pigs Found in Shanghai River
Mar 13th 2013, 05:00

The number of dead pigs fished out of Shanghai's main waterway has reached nearly 6,000, with local officials still puzzled as to how they ended up in the Chinese city's major source of drinking water. State media on Wednesday reported the number of deceased swine found in the Huangpu River has doubled in two days, as workers continue to scan the waterway in search of carcasses. Authorities in Shanghai, China's financial hub, say ear tags from the some of the pigs suggest they ...

Human Rights Watch is calling for an investigation into an incident in which the Thai navy allegedly shot at a group of Rohingya "boat people," killing at least two of the asylum seekers. The New York-based group Wednesday said its investigation revealed that Thai sailors last month opened fire on about 20 Rohingya refugees during a mission to push the group back out to sea. Sequestration Puts Malaria Vaccine Trial in Jeopardy
Mar 13th 2013, 01:00

No buzz is heard.  But you can almost feel the vibration of 10,000 mosquitoes.  Instinctively, you scratch, even though no insect is freely flying. The females are attracted to body heat to feed on blood - and in about a minute create a macabre hand art inside this bucket. Welcome to the mosquito insectary at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.  It's where insects are grown and vaccines are developed.  Scientists here want to create the first malaria vaccine ...

Multi-Million-Dollar Settlements in LA Child Abuse Cases

There were two separate multi-million-dollar settlements in Los Angeles, California Tuesday, involving different cases of multiple child abuse. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese agreed to pay $10 million to four men who say they were abused by a former priest when they were boys. The victims sued the Church and its former head, Cardinal Roger Mahony, who is in Rome as part of the conclave electing a new pope. The victims accuse Mahony of covering up the case by sending the priest out of ...

Latin America's Left Sees Void After Chavez
Mar 12th 2013, 23:07

The death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez leaves a void for the left in Latin America that most analysts say is unlikely to be filled soon.  His death could also eventually affect communist Cuba, which has benefitted from cheap oil and other subsidies from the petroleum-rich nation. In death, as in life, Hugo Chavez won acclaim from the leaders of Latin America's new left, united in their opposition to what they see as U.S. domination of the region. For them, the late ...
