Ghanaian-born scholar Geoge Ayittey says most Africans celebrate the re-election and second inauguration of Barack Obama as U.S. President. Ayittey, who is president of the Washington-based think tank Free Africa Foundation, says Mr. Obama's re-election was significant, given the myriad of issues he faced during his first term. "When he came to office, the U.S. economy was in a free fall. There was a global financial crisis. Unemployment was very high. So the President has done very well ...

Zuma to Push Africa Infrastructure at Davos
Jan 18th 2013, 13:56

South African President Jacob Zuma won't only be representing his nation at next week's World Economic Forum in Switzerland -- he'll be representing all of Africa.  Zuma has been appointed by the African Union to push the world's top economies to focus on boosting Africa's infrastructure.  Experts say the state of the continent's roads, electrical grids and other fixtures are keeping Africa from realizing its potential.  But with developed nations struggling with their own ...

US Still Seeking Clarity on Algeria Situation
Jan 18th 2013, 15:08

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States is still working to get a clear picture of the situation at a natural gas facility in Algeria, which Algerian forces attacked on Thursday after militants had taken dozens of foreigners and hundreds of Algerians hostage.  Nearly 24 hours after Algerian forces launched their assault on the joint Algerian-British-Norwegian facility, senior foreign officials did not know its outcome, or the fate of their citizens who had been taken ...

AFCON: Female Fans Not Welcome at African Football Tournament
Jan 18th 2013, 14:21

As the African Cup of Nations prepares to kick off this weekend, some teams have courted controversy by allegedly saying they don't want female fans attending because they'll bring bad luck. Predictably, this has not gone over well with women. A local South African newspaper cited an AFCON organizer who said that teams from Ghana, Congo, Mali and Niger complained. The organizer said some on the teams believe women bring bad luck and are associated with witchcraft. VOA attempted to reach ...

Labor activists in Thailand are welcoming the government's extension of a deadline for close to two million undocumented migrant workers to become legal. The illegal migrants now have four additional months to register through a new simplified process.  But, activists say the new rules still allow room for exploiting foreign workers mainly from Burma, Cambodia and Laos.  Thailand this week announced a four-month extension on a deadline for undocumented foreign workers to become ...

Human Rights Watch says the conflict in Sudan's Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states has displaced or severely affected an estimated 900,000 people and caused widespread hunger, malnutrition, and associated illness.  With Sudan's army increasing aerial attacks since the end of the rainy season, the situation in the region is rapidly deteriorating.  Key humanitarian figures are calling on the African Union to take action at their summit later this month.  Last July, ...

Syrian state media say a rocket slammed into a building in the country's northern city of Aleppo on Friday, causing casualties. Video broadcast on state television showed large parts of the building collapsed, with medics pulling bodies out of the wreckage. The number of dead and wounded is not immediately known.
