The United States will close a number of its embassies and consulates around the world on Sunday for security reasons. In a written statement, the State Department did not specify which missions have been asked to close, nor the type of threat they face. The statement said the embassies and consulates that have been told to close are ones normally open on Sundays. The U.S. Senate has voted to confirm President Barack Obama's selection for ambassador to the United Nations, approving human rights advocate Samantha Power by a vote of 87-10. Street Photographer Documents Urban Life, Art
Aug 1st 2013, 22:29, by webdesk@voanews.com (Mike O'Sullivan)

Some Los Angeles photographers are documenting the life and urban art of their city.  Photographer Erwin Recinos focuses his camera on LA's street culture, with its decorated cars and graffiti art. Recinos crouches to get a photograph of lowriders at a neighborhood auto show.  Lowriders are classic cars that are customized to sit close to the ground, almost touching the road.  American auto models from 40 or 50 years ago, some even older, are modified by car clubs in ...

US 2nd Quarter GDP - Lackluster, But Better Than Expected
Aug 1st 2013, 21:58, by webdesk@voanews.com (Mil Arcega)

The world's largest economy grew only slightly in the second quarter, expanding at an annualized rate of 1.7 percent between April and June.  Despite the lackluster growth and a downward revision in U.S. gross domestic output in the first quarter, the GDP numbers were still better than some analysts expected.  But the data also suggest the economy is still not growing fast enough for the central bank to change course on monetary policies that have kept interest rates at record ...

Italy's supreme court on Thursday upheld a jail sentence against Silvio Berlusconi for tax fraud in a devastating blow to the four-times prime minister that could throw the country's fragile coalition government into crisis.   The former cruise ship crooner is Italy's most colorful and scandal-prone figure but it was his first definitive conviction in up to 30 court cases on charges ranging from fraud and corruption to having sex with an underage prostitute.   After a ...

Armed Groups Impose 'Gun Law' in Eastern DRC
Aug 1st 2013, 18:43, by webdesk@voanews.com (Nick Long)

People who have fled from the Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern conflict zone say the armed groups that control their villages have imposed a new rule: each family must buy a firearm from the local armed group, or face unpleasant consequences.  There are many firearms in Masisi territory, the part of eastern Congo that saw the country's worst inter-ethnic violence last year.  Now, according to people who fled the territory, gun ownership has been made virtually ...

America's space agency, NASA, has produced a video showing how Earth's surface temperatures have been changing over the years. NASA scientists gathered temperature data from over 1,000 weather stations from around the world since 1880. The video below shows 130 years of temperatures changes relative to the local averages in the mid-1900s. In the video, red means warmer, and blue means colder. Polls Show Growing Frustration With Washington

Politicians in Washington are no strangers to negative public opinion polls.  But a recent spate of dismal surveys suggests the political polarization and dysfunction in Washington is reaching new depths.  The numbers are mind-numbingly bad. In the latest Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll, Congress has a disapproval rate of 83 percent, an all-time high for that survey. President Barack Obama's approval rating is 45 percent, which matches that of George W. Bush at a similar point ...

The head of Tunisia's Islamist ruling party refused on Thursday to remove the prime minister from his post, a hardening of its position toward opposition demands that the government be dissolved.   Earlier this week, leaders from the ruling Ennahda party said they were willing to consider creating a new unity government to help ease the political crisis.   "We are open to new agreements ... but we are holding firm to Mr. Ali Larayedh as the head of the government," party chief ...

U.S. lawmakers have introduced a bill to strengthen federal laws against child sex trafficking, a proposal that has broad bipartisan support and will be considered after members of Congress return from an August recess.   Earlier this week, the FBI announced the rescue of more than 100 sexually exploited children as a result of a nationwide sweep of sex traffickers. The Pentagon says Afghanistan will need U.S. support after the combat mission there is over in 2014. But for the U.S. troops to stay, there needs to be a bilateral security agreement. Talks were suspended in June by Afghan President Hamid Karzai in protest against U.S. overtures to the Taliban.  The United Nations says civilian deaths in Afghanistan are up 23 percent this year, with most coming at the hands of anti-government forces.
