New Iranian President Wants Nuclear Deal in 3-6 Months
Sep 25th 2013, 23:55

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are scheduled to meet Thursday to start high-level negotiations on Iran's nuclear program. The talks at the United Nations are fueling cautious hope for progress after a decade of failed diplomacy. Syria and its chemical weapons continued to dominate the United Nations General Assembly session in New York. Speaker after speaker on the assembly's second day Wednesday condemned the use of poison gas against civilians. They demanded that Syria keep its promise to rid itself of such weapons. European Council President Herman Van Rompuy spoke for 28 European Union members when he called the chemical weapons attack last month near Damascus an abhorrent crime against humanity. Putin Signals Lighter Charges For Greenpeace Arctic Protests
Sep 25th 2013, 23:05, by webdesk@voanews.com (James Brooke)

Facing international outcry over the jailing of 30 Greenpeace activists in the Russian Arctic, President Vladimir Putin sent a signal to prosecutors for leniency. "It is obvious they're not pirates," he said Wednesday at an Arctic conference in Salekhard. "However, formally, they tried to seize our platform." Salekhard is 500 kilometers southeast of  the Pechora Sea, where Greenpeace activists tried last week to board Russia's only offshore oil production platform in the Arctic. ...

Sep 25th 2013, 22:31, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Four years after it crushed a long separatist rebellion, Sri Lanka may be sliding into an authoritarian system as President Mahinda Rajapaksa gathers power around him, the U.N. human rights chief said on Wednesday. The report by Navi Pillay, said the largely Buddhist South Asian state also was seeing a surge of violence against religious minorities - Christians, Muslims and Hindus - while the Colombo government stood by.
