The president of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region has threatened to intervene to defend the Kurdish population caught up in Syria's unrest.   In a statement posted online Saturday, Massoud Barzani said if Kurds in Syria are under threat, then Iraqi Kurdistan will "make use of all its capabilities" to defend them.   Barzani offered no specifics as to how he planned to protect Syrian Kurds.   Kurds make up about 10 percent of Syria's population and ...

Israel's Netanyahu to Undergo Hernia Surgery

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set to undergo hernia surgery late Saturday.   Netanyahu was admitted to a Jerusalem hospital after complaining of abdominal pain.   The surgery is expected to take about an hour and Netanyahu is expected to be released on Sunday.   A Cabinet meeting planned for Sunday will be postponed.

Six migrants drowned when their boat ran aground off the coast of southern Italy Saturday.   More than 90 others on the vessel survived by swimming to a beach near the Sicilian city of Catania or by being rescued from the boat by Italian authorities.   It is not clear where the migrants were from but thousands of people, most from northern Africa, attempt to cross the Mediterranean in hopes of finding jobs and a better life in Europe.   Most are sent back to their homelands ...
