Smithsonian Genome Exhibit Unlocks 21st Century Science of Life
Jun 27th 2013, 20:15

A genomic revolution is changing people's lives.  A new exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington explores the extraordinary impact it is having on science, medicine and nature.  "Genome: Unlocking Life's Code" opened to large crowds seeking to learn more about the field. The exhibit marks two scientific milestones: The 10th anniversary of the completion of the human genome project, the first blueprint of the human body, and the 60th ...

Researchers Restore Bladder Control in Paralyzed Rats
Jun 27th 2013, 20:00

Researchers have developed a promising technique that may some day restore bladder function in people with paralysis. They have regenerated nerves involved in bladder control in rats with spinal cord injuries, making it possible for the animals to urinate normally again. The loss of bladder function is one of the most serious problems afflicting people with severe spinal cord injury.  Their bladders are no longer able to work properly because motor signals from the brain stem where the ...

Millions of US Students Face Higher Costs Unless Congress Acts
Jun 27th 2013, 21:47

Seven million low-income U.S. college students face higher costs unless President Barack Obama and both Democrats and Republicans in Congress reach an agreement by July.  Many experts doubt the bickering politicians will act in time to prevent a doubling of the interest charged on education loans for students who need the financial help the most.  This dispute comes as a college education is more important than ever to get good jobs, and college costs are soaring.  About ...

President Barack Obama on Thursday cut off longtime U.S. trade benefits for Bangladesh in a mostly symbolic response to dangerous conditions in that country's garment industry that have cost more than 1,200 lives in the past year.   "I have determined that it is appropriate to suspend Bangladesh ... because it is not taking steps to afford internationally recognized worker rights to workers in the country," Obama said in a statement.   The U.S. sanction does not directly affect ...

Obama Makes Moving Visit to Site of African Slave Trade
Jun 27th 2013, 21:58

U.S. President Barack Obama says his visit to a departure point of African slaves to North America gives him more motivation to protect human rights. Obama stopped on Goree Island, off the coast of Senegal, Thursday.  Historians say thousands of African men and women in chains were held there. They passed through the so-called "Door of No Return" to board slave ships on their way across the Atlantic. Obama called his visit to the island a "very powerful moment" that ...

Syria Doubles Diesel Prices to Cut Cost of Subsidies
Jun 27th 2013, 20:09

Syria has nearly doubled the price for diesel fuel to cut back on the cost of maintaining generous subsidies to the population after two years of war that crippled its economy.   The new official price of 60 pounds (33 U.S. cents) for a liter of diesel from state petrol stations is still a fraction of the commercial price for the fuel on the black market, the only way it is available in many parts of Syria.   Even in government-held areas, petrol stations that sell subsidized fuel ...

Glastonbury Kicks Off With Mud, Megastars
Jun 27th 2013, 21:21

Britain's largest music festival got off to a traditionally muddy start on Thursday as thousands of campers arrived at Glastonbury in pouring rain for three days of music headlined by veteran rockers the Rolling Stones.   The event that started as a retreat for about 1,500 hippies on a dairy farm in rural Somerset in 1970 has grown into the world's largest music festival, featuring about 2,000 acts on 58 stages and attended by more than 135,000 people.   Gates opened early ...

Researchers Identify Potential Cause of Alzheimer's Damage
Jun 27th 2013, 21:00

Researchers at the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) have identified a brain protein that may have a role in causing the dementia of Alzheimer's disease. The finding could allow scientists to develop more effective treatments. Neurons are the wiring through which information, in the form of electricity, travels through the brain. For these electrical impulses to get where they're going, they have to jump across the spaces between neurons. These spaces are called synapses, and a ...
