Obama to CEOs: Press Republicans on Fiscal Talks
Dec 5th 2012, 20:23

U.S. President Barack Obama has urged American business leaders to press Republicans in Congress to reach a compromise in deadlocked deficit reduction talks. The remarks came as a key Republican lawmaker said it is up to the president to make the next move in negotiations. Obama appealed to chief executive officers of leading U.S. corporations to help break what he called the "logjam" created by congressional Republicans on a deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff - automatic ...

Vietnam's Elephants Face Threats from Near and Far
Dec 5th 2012, 20:23

At the end of the war in 1975, as many as 2,000 wild elephants roamed the lowland forests of Vietnam.  Today, there are as few as 50. Poaching and habitat destruction have brought the animals to the brink of extinction, and conservationists say the only herd with a long-term chance of survival is located along the border separating Yok Don National Park and Cambodia.  According to park director Tran Van Thanh, the already limited forests are shrinking as local communities cut trees ...

Corruption: It's Easier Than You Think
Dec 5th 2012, 20:02

When I lived in Cambodia, I got into a lot of fights. I'd protest the fruit seller who was overcharging me for mangoes because I was American. I'd wave my hands at the police officer who fined me for driving on the correct side of the road. I'd get angry with doctors at the "free" clinic for charging poor patients for drugs. My Cambodian boyfriend usually just watched and shook his head. But when we went to the Justice Ministry to get papers for his U.S. visa application, he told me not to ...
