Washington Closely Monitoring Rising Tensions Between Nuclear Rivals
Aug 17th 2013, 00:27, by webdesk@voanews.com (Kokab Farshori)

The United States is closely watching escalating tensions between Pakistan and India. While U.S. focus in the region is on the American troop drawdown in neighboring Afghanistan, analysts say Washington is keeping a close eye on Indo-Pakistani relations. The latest tensions began last week, when India accused Pakistan of attacking and killing five of its troops in the disputed Kashmir region. Pakistan denied the allegation. The escalation in tension between the two nuclear rivals is a cause ...

A century ago, American industrialist and philanthropist Pierre du Pont put his fortune to work planting an elaborate garden in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Not only were there landscaped grounds and large fountains, du Pont built over one-and-a-half hectares of grand, glass-enclosed greenhouses, or conservatories. Oh yes, and a massive organ with more than 10,000 pipes.   A greenhouse might seem an odd place to put a grand pipe organ. But the conservatories at Longwood Gardens are no ...

At least 17 people were killed but hundreds were rescued after a passenger ferry sank following a collision with a cargo vessel in the central Philippines, a coastguard commander said. "We don't know if there are still people missing," Rear Admiral Luis Tuason told local radio early on Saturday, citing a discrepancy between the actual numbers killed or rescued and the ferry's manifest, which showed 692 crew and passengers on board. Tuason, the acting chief of the coast guard, said ...

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday asked European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to "urgently" send  monitors to Gibraltar's border with Spain where tightened security checks are fueling a row between the two countries.   Cameron raised the matter in a phone call with Barroso on Friday, saying he had serious concerns that these extra checks were "politically motivated and disproportionate" and "illegitimate" under European Union laws.   "We believe ...
