Congo Army Battles M23 Rebels Near Goma
Aug 26th 2013, 23:30, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Congo's army said it clashed Monday with eastern rebels, ending a brief lull in days of fighting that has killed and wounded dozens. The violence, the most serious in months, is the first major test for a newly-deployed U.N. Intervention Brigade, which has an unprecedented mandate to launch military operations against rebels at the heart of nearly two decades of conflict. It has fought alongside Congo's army several times since the latest fighting erupted on Wednesday, but said it ...

Ovarian Cancer Test Shows Promise in Screening Healthy Women
Aug 26th 2013, 22:46, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jessica Berman)

Researchers are exploring a new strategy that would allow a blood test, long used to detect ovarian cancer in women suspected of having the disease, to function as a screening tool for the lethal illness in healthy women. Ovarian cancer is responsible for nearly two percent of all cancers diagnosed globally each year, according to the World Cancer Research Fund International. The disease is highly lethal because it often causes no specific symptoms in its early stages, and by the time a woman ...

Women Recall '63 March on Washington
Aug 26th 2013, 20:35, by webdesk@voanews.com (Suzanne Presto)

In August of 1963, an estimated 250,000 people from across the country gathered for the March on Washington to call for racial equality.        The turnout on the National Mall was a credit to organizers such as Eleanor Holmes Norton. She is now a congresswoman, and back in 1963 she worked in New York City publicizing the march and arranging transportation to the capital.  Norton stayed in New York to help with last-minute arrangements the night ...

Backers of Madagascar's Deposed Leader to Name New Candidate
Aug 26th 2013, 19:06, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Backers of the deposed president of Madagascar said on Monday they would name a new candidate to run in a delayed presidential election after his wife was barred from the race. Supporters of former President Marc Ravalomanana earlier this month threatened to take to the streets after Madagascar's Special Electoral Court (CES) blocked his wife, Lalao Ravalomanana, as well as President Andry Rajaoelina, from running. Monday's announcement could help defuse tensions on the Indian Ocean ...

Gulf Islamists Irked as Monarchs Back Egypt's Generals
Aug 26th 2013, 20:59, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

A scuffle broke the reflective atmosphere of Friday prayers in Riyadh's al-Ferdous mosque after the imam deplored the recent bloody crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood protesters by the military in nearby Egypt. The fight between members of the congregation, recorded on a widely circulated YouTube clip and reported by the daily al-Hayat newspaper, demonstrated how high feelings are running in the devoutly Muslim kingdom. While they have been careful to express only muted dissent in public, ...
