Weapons Watchdog Group Approves Syria Disarmament Plan
Sep 27th 2013, 23:27

An international chemical weapons watchdog group has approved a disarmament plan for Syria. The decision by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons late Friday paves the way for the United Nations Security Council to adopt a resolution making the plan legally binding. The Security Council is expected to vote on the resolution later Friday. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem told VOA Syria will support the resolution "as long as it is according to our commitment when ...

Polish Ensemble Conducts 'Four-by-Four' Orchestra
Sep 27th 2013, 22:25, by webdesk@voanews.com (Bernard Shusman)

A square maple table that contains a small orchestra would appear at first an impossibility.  But at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, one such orchestra performed for several days recently.   The sounds, from a music video, are by the Polish ensemble Karbido.   Polish ensemble Karbido's instrument looks like a traditional table made of maple planks.  But it's complex, outfitted with interior microphones, hidden strings and flutes, plus four talented ...

Yoga Eases Some Menopause Symptoms
Sep 27th 2013, 23:34

A 12-week yoga course and practicing at home eases insomnia felt by many women going through menopause. But the relaxation exercise did not significantly improve hot flashes and night sweats, two other common complaints of women nearing the end of their childbearing years. The multi-center trial recruited nearly 250 healthy, previously sedentary women to see whether yoga and other natural approaches would help ease their menopause complaints. In addition to yoga, investigators compared ...

Intravaginal Ring Prevents Infection with AIDS-Like Disease in Monkeys
Sep 27th 2013, 23:59

Researchers have tested a new medical device that protects female monkeys from an AIDS-like virus, and it could turn out to also protect humans. It is a vaginal ring containing an anti-retroviral drug that protects 100 percent of female monkeys from becoming infected with a non-human primate version of HIV known as simian immunodeficiency virus. Called NuvaRing, developers believe it could help women in areas of the world where HIV is prevalent. Sixty percent of Africa's HIV/AIDS sufferers ...

US-Burmese Team Scales What Climbers Claim is Southeast Asia's Highest Peak
Sep 27th 2013, 20:00, by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)

A joint American-Burmese expedition has become the first to summit a mountain peak that the climbers believe is the highest point in southeast Asia: Gamlang Razi in Burma's Kachin State. But not everyone is ready to revise the record books because Hkakabo Razi has long been believed to be the highest mountain in southeast Asia. Located in Burma's north, near the Chinese and Indian border, the remote mountain is part of an eastern range of the Himalayas.   However, this week a group ...

Brazil Polls: Rousseff's Popularity Still on Rebound
Sep 27th 2013, 21:55, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

President Dilma Rousseff continues to recover popularity lost after the massive protests that shook Brazil in June, bolstering her chances of re-election next year, two polls published on Friday showed.   The polls confirm the results of other recent public opinion surveys showing Rousseff has overcome the dramatic drop in support she suffered after the protests, which targeted all of Brazil's political elite, including her ruling Workers' Party.   The number of Brazilians ...

Indonesia to Host Miss World Pageant Despite Protests
Sep 27th 2013, 23:05

Beauty queens from around the world will sashay down the runway in Bali, Indonesia Saturday despite weeks of protests and warnings from embassies that extremists might attack the Miss World pageant. This year's contest was slated to be held in the Indonesia capital, Jakarta, but was moved to the majority-Hindu resort island of Bali amid security concerns. Islamic extremists protested this year's pageant location in Indonesia, one of the most populous Muslim nations in the ...
