Oetzi, the Iceman Mummy, has Living Relatives
Oct 15th 2013, 15:23, by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)

At least 19 Austrians living in the Tyrol region are descendants of the 5,300-year-old Oetzi the 'Iceman,' a frozen, mummified body that was found in the Italian Alps in 1991. "These men and the 'Iceman' had the same ancestors," Walther Parson, a researcher at the Institute for Forensic Medicine in Innsbruck, told the Austrian Press Agency. Oetzi's kin were found by screening DNA records of 3,700 Austrian blood donors. Scientists keyed on a rare Y-chromosome mutation, ...

House to Vote on Measure on Funding, Debt Limit
Oct 15th 2013, 15:27

Republican lawmakers say the U.S. House of Representatives plans to vote on a bill Tuesday to reopen the government and avoid a financial default, as hopes rise for a congressional deal to end a political standoff. Congressman Darrell Issa says the House plan is similar to a measure being debated in the Senate. Both bills would fund the government for three months and raise the government's debt limit for nearly four months . The House plan asks for two concessions on the new U.S. health ...

Icebergs, Insurance Hamper Top of the World Shipping Route
Oct 15th 2013, 12:50, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

The new shipping route opened up through the Arctic by climate change will not be crowded any time soon. Cargoes of coal, diesel and gas have made the trip but high insurance costs, slow going and strict environmental rules mean there will not be a rush to follow them. Looser ice means icebergs. One vessel has already been holed, and large ice breaking vessels, not always on hand, are a must. "Significant safety and navigational concerns remain an obstacle to commercial shipping in the ...

A once-in-a-decade typhoon threatened Japan on Tuesday, disrupting travel and shipping and forcing precautions to be taken at the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant. Typhoon Wipha is moving across the Pacific straight towards the capital, Tokyo, and is expected to make landfall during the morning rush hour on Wednesday, bringing hurricane-force winds to the metropolitan area of 30 million people. Egyptian Officials: Morsi Supporter Linked to Cairo Attack Arrested
Oct 15th 2013, 13:41, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Egyptian security officials said on Tuesday that authorities had arrested a supporter of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Morsi suspected of involvement in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on a state-owned satellite station in Cairo. Any link between the suspect and Morsi in the Oct. 7 attack in the capital is likely to be used to justify tougher measures against Islamists, who authorities have portrayed as terrorists since the army seized power on July 3. Two people were wounded in the ...

Indian Sage Dreams of Gold to Save Economy
Oct 15th 2013, 13:57, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

The Indian government is digging for treasure after a civic-minded Hindu village sage dreamt that 1,000 tons of gold was buried under a ruined palace, and wrote to tell the central bank about it. The state Archeological Survey of India has sent a team of archeologists to the village of Daundia Khera in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. They are due to start digging on Friday, Praveen Kumar Mishra, the head archeologist in the state, told Reuters. Yogi Swami Shobhan Sarkar says the gold ...

Kenya's Ruto to Cooperate with ICC Despite African Pressure
Oct 15th 2013, 13:58, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Deputy Kenyan President William Ruto said on Tuesday he would continue to cooperate with the International Criminal Court despite a call from African leaders for the prosecution of President Uhuru Kenyatta to be halted. Ruto told a news conference in The Hague that he would prefer for the case to proceed but that he should be excused from appearing in person so that he could carry on with his duties in Kenya. Ruto and Kenyatta face charges of crimes against humanity over accusations they ...

Under Fire, TEPCO Prepares for Critical Phase of Fukushima Cleanup
Oct 15th 2013, 14:16, by webdesk@voanews.com (Henry Ridgwell)

Workers at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan are about to embark on one of the most critical aspects of the clean-up: removing the fuel rods from one of the worst-hit reactors. Critics say the plant's owners, TEPCO, should not be trusted to carry out the operation and warn the consequences of any accident would be unprecedented. Over 1500 fuel rods sit in a damaged storage pool 30 meters above the ground inside the shell of the reactor 4 building at the Fukushima Daiichi ...

House, Senate Leaders Work on Deals to Avoid Debt Default
Oct 15th 2013, 14:38, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

U.S. senators expressed hope that a bipartisan deal could emerge on Tuesday to end Washington's fiscal crisis even as Republicans in the House of Representatives said they were working on a separate plan.   Even if Democrats and Republicans agree, it could be Wednesday before the U.S. Senate signs off on a plan, senators said, close to a Thursday deadline when the Obama administration says it will reach its borrowing limit and risk default. House Speaker John Boehner met with ...

93 Killed in Philippines Earthquake
Oct 15th 2013, 14:46

A powerful earthquake struck the central Philippines early Tuesday, killing at least 93 people and wounding hundreds more in a popular tourist region. The 7.2-magnitude quake was centered near Bohol Island, where authorities say the majority of the casualties occurred. The quake, and several powerful aftershocks, collapsed buildings, buckled roads, and sent frightened residents rushing out of their homes and businesses. A freelance coordinator in nearby Cebu City, Sian Maynard , tells VOA ...

Muslims Celebrate Eid al-Adha With Prayers
Oct 15th 2013, 14:52

Muslims around the world are celebrating the festival of Eid al-Adha with special prayers, meals and charitable donations to the needy. Eid al-Adha, which began Tuesday, is one of two major religious feasts on the Islamic calendar. It comes about two months after Eid al-Fitr, when Muslims ended the holy fasting month of Ramadan with similar customs of prayer, feasting and charity. Eid al-Adha coincides with the annual Muslim pilgrimage to the Saudi holy city of Mecca. Muslims observe the ...

Oct 15th 2013, 15:04

Burmese authorities have arrested three men in connection with a series of bombings and attempted bombings around the country that have killed two people since late last week. A lieutenant colonel of police in Rangoon says the three suspects were identified from images recorded by surveillance cameras.
