Texas Governor Signs Restrictive Abortion Law
Jul 18th 2013, 23:31, by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)

Texas Governor Rick Perry has signed new abortion restrictions that could shutter most of the clinics in the state.   The new law bans abortions after the fifth month of pregnancy and dictates when abortion-inducing drugs can be taken. But it also requires abortion clinic doctors to have hospital admitting privileges and restricts abortions to surgical centers. Only five of Texas' 42 abortion clinics currently meet the new requirements. The law will take effect in October and ...

Six Colombians Charged in Killing of US Drug Agent
Jul 19th 2013, 00:20

The U.S. Justice Department says six Colombian nationals have been indicted by a federal grand jury for the kidnapping and murder of an American drug enforcement agent last month in Bogota. James "Terry" Watson died after being stabbed in a taxi in Bogota on June 20. U.S. prosecutors say the defendants, who all are under arrest in Colombia, ran an organized robbery gang that used taxis to lure victims they thought were wealthy. The six were charged with two counts of second-degree ...

Environment May Affect Development of Language
Jul 18th 2013, 20:51, by webdesk@voanews.com (Megan McGrath)

There are about 7,000 languages in the world, and they are constantly evolving and changing. But it's a bit of a mystery why languages change the way they do. Anthropologist Caleb Everett of the University of Miami believes he may have found some of the first evidence that environment can influence the way people speak. "I do remember standing up from my desk and saying, 'Wow, this is really striking,'" said Everett. He knew that a small proportion of the world's ...

New Belgian King Faces Tough Task of Uniting Divided Nation

The monarchy, along with soccer and beer, is viewed as one of the rare things that unify linguistically divided Belgium and when Prince Philippe becomes its new king on Sunday he will try to prove this is still so. The early signs are that he has work to do. In a poll conducted by the private TV stations VTM and RTL, just under half of all Flemish respondents believed Philippe would be a good king, compared to two-thirds of respondents in Wallonia. The political bickering between ...

Not even an Argentine pope's planned return to South America has inspired the government to loosen strict currency controls for prospective pilgrims trying to see Pope Francis in neighboring Brazil next week.   Thousands of young people, many of modest economic means, plan to travel to Rio de Janeiro for the Catholic Church's World Day of Youth to greet the Argentine native on his first trip abroad as head of the Church when he arrives on Monday.   But restrictions on ...

Nigeria's government is preparing to prosecute 500 people it has detained on allegations of stealing oil, officials said on Thursday in a crackdown on a criminal enterprise that drains up to a fifth of the country's oil output.   Gangs tap into pipelines in the creeks and swamps of the Niger Delta, siphoning off hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil a day in operations known as "bunkering."   The governor of Delta state, Emmanuel Uduaghan, told reporters after a ...
