Hajj Begins Amid Worries About Health and Regional Turmoil
Oct 14th 2013, 22:36, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jerome Socolovsky)

An estimated 1.5 to 2 million Muslims are on the annual pilgrimage to Mecca known as the Hajj. That's far fewer than last year, as Saudi authorities seek to keep the ritual isolated both from tensions in other Middle Eastern countries and from a health threat that has killed more than 50 people in the kingdom. After circling the Kaaba - the holiest spot in Islam -  the pilgrims converged on a hilltop where Islam's Prophet Muhammad called on Muslims to unite some 14 centuries ago. But ...

SpaceX's Grasshopper Goes Up, Comes Down
Oct 14th 2013, 22:34, by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)

What goes up, must come down. And sometimes, the trip back to Earth is just as important as the flight itself. That's what SpaceX proved recently when its 10-story Grasshopper rocket flew nearly 744 meters into the air, reversed course and then made a gentle vertical landing on the same launch pad from which it started. The successful test marks a milestone for the company, which plans to launch reusable rockets. The flight took place October 7 and demonstrated the feasibility of a ...

An explosion has been reported in a room of a luxury hotel in Burma's main city of Rangoon, and one American was injured. It was not immediately clear what caused Monday's blast at the Traders Hotel, the latest in a series of explosions in Burma. Senate Leaders Optimistic About Debt/Shutdown Deal
Oct 14th 2013, 22:38, by webdesk@voanews.com (Mil Arcega)

A White House meeting with congressional leaders was postponed Monday afternoon to give negotiators more time to work out a plan to avert a default on the nation's debt and end the partial government shutdown.  Analysts warn failure to resolve the budget and borrowing issues by Thursday could have serious ramifications for the US and global economy.  The clock is ticking closer to the Thursday deadline after weekend negotiations failed to produce a compromise.  On Monday, ...
