Obama: Congress Must Act Quickly on Spending, Debt Issues
Sep 16th 2013, 22:56

U.S. President Barack Obama is urging Congress to quickly pass a new spending plan and increase the country's borrowing limit, so that the country does not default on its debt. "Congress needs to get it done without ...

Colombian Drug Trafficker Sentenced to 16 Years
Sep 16th 2013, 22:50

The U.S. government says it has sentenced a high-level Colombian drug trafficker to more than 16 years in prison. The Justice Department says Jose Maria Corredor-Ibague, also known as Boyaco, is the first person to be indicted and convicted under a recent federal narco-terrorism statute. It says the suspect was prosecuted under the measure because of his close involvement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. The Marxist-rebel group is considered a terrorist organization ...

Sep 16th 2013, 22:19, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Seven people were confirmed dead and at least 1,500 homes destroyed in Colorado after a week of rare, torrential rains along the eastern slopes of the Rockies, and helicopter search-and-rescue flights resumed on Monday in flood-stricken areas.   Much of the evacuation effort was focused on remote foothill and canyon communities of Larimer and Boulder counties in north-central Colorado, where 1,000 residents remained stranded due to washed-out roads, bridges and communication lines, the ...

12 Dead in Shooting at Washington Naval Facility
Sep 16th 2013, 22:40

A gunman shot dead 12 people and wounded about a dozen others before being killed by police Monday at a U.S. Naval facility in Washington, DC. Police identify the gunman as a former military contractor . They say it is not clear how he got access to the U.S. Navy Yard without proper identification or what his motive was. Washington Mayor Vincent Gray says there is no reason to believe this was a terrorist attack. Police say they are still seeking a second person seen in a surveillance video ...

Costa Concordia Inches Upward as Salvage Continues
Sep 16th 2013, 21:57, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Salvage crews shifted the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship slowly off a rock shelf on Monday in a painstaking process that looked set to continue into the early hours of the morning.   The most complex and costly salvage operation of its kind ever attempted began at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) on the Italian island of Giglio after a three-hour delay due to an overnight storm, and progress was slower than originally estimated.   Still on its side, the flank of the ship was entirely off the ...
