Israel Frees 26 More Palestinian Prisoners
Oct 30th 2013, 00:10

Israel freed 26 more Palestinian prisoners Tuesday, as part of a U.S.-brokered deal to revive peace talks. The 26 were given a hero's welcome as they returned to the West Bank and Gaza. Crowds hoisted the former prisoners on their shoulders as music blasted and friends and relatives danced. This was the second of a four-stage release of 104 Palestinians. The first group was freed in August. Many of the Palestinians were jailed for killing Israelis. Some had been locked up for more than ...

Virginia Vote Could Send National Message on Political Gridlock
Oct 29th 2013, 22:47, by webdesk@voanews.com (Brian Padden)

The political fallout from the recent U.S. government shutdown over a dispute about the Obama administration's health care policy can already be seen in the upcoming election for governor in the U.S. state of Virginia.  In this swing state where neither party can claim an overwhelming majority of support, voters are voicing support for compromise over ideology. In the Republican leaning town of Culpeper, Virginia, diners at the Frost Cafe like Mike Luhko are still angry over the ...

Researcher Identifies New Potential Target for Malaria Control
Oct 29th 2013, 20:58, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jessica Berman)

Scientists have discovered a way to interfere with the female malaria mosquito's ability to produce eggs.  The findings could lead to another method for controlling the spread of the parasitic illness, which, according to U.S. government statistics, claimed nearly 660 thousand lives in 2010, most of them children in sub-Saharan Africa.   Mosquitoes that carry malaris are becoming increasingly resistant to the insecticides in treated bed nets, so finding another method of control ...
