Amateur and professional skywatchers all over the world send observations to the Minor Planet Center, which collects information about near-Earth objects. The clearinghouse is just one way people are working to protect us from asteroid strikes. Scientists also are developing innovative ways to detect, deflect and possibly destroy dangerous asteroids in Earth's neighborhood. Obama: US-Mexican Border Most Secure in Years
May 2nd 2013, 23:01

President Barack Obama says the U.S.-Mexican border is more secure today than it has been in years, but that more needs to be done. Obama held talks in Mexico City Thursday with new Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. The U.S. leader said immigration and security matters constantly overshadow the Mexican and American economies and bog down business relations. Chinese Immigrants Move Out of US Chinatowns
May 2nd 2013, 22:20

Asians are the fastest growing minority group in the United States, and people of Chinese heritage have been in the United States since the mid-1800s.  Almost every major U.S. city has a "Chinatown."  But many Chinese Americans have assimilated and actually live in the suburbs. From San Francisco to New York, visitors flock to Chinatown for food and souvenirs. But the Chinatowns in major U.S. cities these days are mainly for the tourists, says the acting director of the Chinese ...

Robotic Fly Mimics Real Life Insect
May 2nd 2013, 21:26

A team of engineers at Harvard University has taken cues from Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical bug has become a platform for a suite of new high-tech integrated systems.  A team of engineers designed a robot to do what a fly does naturally. The tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. It's agile and fast. Its miniature flapping wings allow it to hover in place and perform controlled flight maneuvers. "It's extremely important for us to think about this as a ...

Scientists Discover How to Grow New Blood Vessels
May 2nd 2013, 22:20

Scientists have discovered how heart disease patients with dangerously blocked arteries are able to grow new blood vessels to by-pass the blockage, and keep oxygen-rich blood flowing through their bodies. The discovery is raising the possibility of new treatments for cardiac patients.  In people with heart disease, it is not uncommon for new blood vessels to grow around blocked arteries in order to keep essential, oxygenated blood coursing through the body. But those emergency blood ...

Russia's New Mariinsky Theater Woos Doubters
May 2nd 2013, 22:47

Enlisting the drama of Prokofiev and the elegance of Tchaikovsky, St. Petersburg's new Mariinsky theater staged a gala opening on Thursday designed to silence critics of the starkly modernist building erected in the heart of Russia's imperial capital. The $700-million glass and limestone building, which critics have dubbed the "Mariinsky mall," glowed in the night sky, its glass and metal walkways humming with excited voices as the select crowd of 2,000 found their seats. ...
