Kenya Election Officials Charged Over Faulty Vote Count Equipment
Oct 31st 2013, 04:00, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

The chief executive of Kenya's electoral commission was charged on Wednesday over a $15 million tender for equipment that was meant to prevent vote fraud during March's presidential election but broke down during the count.   The new technology was aimed at avoiding the violent disputes that led to 1,200 deaths after the election five years ago. Previous votes in Kenya have also been dogged by "ghost" voters, stuffed ballot boxes and rigging of the final tally.   As well as ...

The Boston Red Sox have won the Major League Baseball World Series, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 in Wednesday night's game six to clinch their third championship in 10 years. Playing in front of a raucous home crowd, Boston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when outfielder Shane Victorino hit a bases-loaded double. US Treasury: China Currency Still 'Significantly Undervalued'
Oct 31st 2013, 04:20

The Obama administration has again criticized China for significantly undervaluing its currency, but stopped short of labeling Beijing a currency manipulator. In its twice-yearly report to Congress Wednesday, the United States Treasury acknowledged the value of China's currency, the renminbi, is rising, "but not as fast or by as much as is needed." Washington has long accused Beijing of keeping the value of its currency artificially low, giving Chinese companies an unfair ...

No Polio in South Sudan -- Officials
Oct 31st 2013, 02:40, by webdesk@voanews.com (Andrew Green)

South Sudan and World Health Organization (WHO) officials have reassured locals and the international community that South Sudan is polio-free, after they found that three reported cases of the crippling disease were misdiagnoses. "We were given a false alarm last month when an error occurred in a reference lab in Nairobi, due to a human error," South Sudanese Health Minister Riek Gai Kok said after he was notified late last week by the WHO that two patients in Northern Bahr el ...

Europeans Seek Answers from US on NSA Spying
Oct 31st 2013, 02:28, by webdesk@voanews.com (Kent Klein)

European officials are in Washington seeking more information about charges that the United States has been spying on Europeans and their leaders.   Claims that the National Security Agency tapped German Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone prompted her intelligence team to visit the White House on Wednesday. Israel Announces New Settlement Plans in E. Jerusalem
Oct 30th 2013, 23:14

Israel has announced plans to build new homes in East Jerusalem, angering Palestinians. The government said Wednesday one of the four projects includes 1,500 homes in the Ramat Shlomo area. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state, and they fiercely oppose Israeli plans to build there. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki says the United States does not think continued settlement activity creates a positive environment for the revived peace talks. The plans ...
