Russia's Anti-Gay Law Tests Olympic Tenets
Sep 12th 2013, 23:23, by webdesk@voanews.com (David Byrd)

The Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, are less than six month months away.  But a controversy over a Russian law that bans propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations could cast a shadow over the competition and negatively impact the Olympic movement.   The text of the Olympic charter is rather straightforward.  Article 4 reads:   "The practice of sport is a human right.  Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without ...

Syria Takes First Step Toward Joining CW Treaty
Sep 12th 2013, 23:38, by webdesk@voanews.com (Margaret Besheer)

Syria has taken its first step toward joining an international treaty banning the production and use of chemical weapons. U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters the U.N. received a document Thursday from the Syrian government that concerns its accession to the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention. "There is a process to be followed to join the Chemical Weapons Convention treaty and this is a step towards that," said Haq. Haq said the United Nations is translating and reviewing the ...

Researchers Say Vaccine 'Completely Clears' AIDS Virus from Monkeys
Sep 12th 2013, 20:37, by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)

An experimental HIV/AIDS vaccine appears to have completely cleared a primate form of HIV from test monkeys. The primate version of HIV, called simian immunodeficiency virus, or SIV, causes AIDS in monkeys. Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University hope an HIV-form of the vaccine can soon be tested in humans. "To date, HIV infection has only been cured in a very small number of highly-publicized but unusual clinical cases in which HIV-infected individuals were treated with ...

Destroying Syria's Chemical Stockpiles a Costly, Lengthy Process
Sep 12th 2013, 19:28, by webdesk@voanews.com (Cecily Hilleary)

President Barack Obama is holding off on a decision to attack Syria so he can explore a negotiated settlement on securing and destroying the country's arsenal of chemical weapons.  Twice in recent years - in Iraq and in Libya - the U.S. and its allies have dismantled and destroyed chemical weapons programs, but never in the middle of a war. But Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, says the experience gained in Iraq and Libya shows that dismantling Syria's ...

Sep 12th 2013, 20:23, by webdesk@voanews.com (Scott Stearns)

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry opened talks in Geneva Thursday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as international negotiations intensify to get Syria to dismantle its chemical weapons arsenal.   Kerry said before the first day of talks that he hopes diplomacy can avoid the need for a U.S. military strike on Syria for using chemical weapons against civilians last month.   Kerry said while the United States and Russia disagree over who was behind the poison gas attack, ...

Sep 12th 2013, 21:12, by webdesk@voanews.com (Dan Robinson)

President Barack Obama is hopeful that U.S.-Russian talks can bring about a diplomatic solution on Syria and its chemical weapons.  The White House meanwhile has responded to a newspaper commentary by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and discussed U.S. military aid to Syrian rebels.  Beginning a cabinet meeting Thursday, President Obama referred to the talks the United States and Russia are holding in Geneva. EU Could Punish Croatia Over Extradition Row
Sep 12th 2013, 21:23, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

The European Commission is likely to punish Croatia next week in a row over extradition rules that has marred the former Yugoslav state's first months as a member of the European Union and may endanger EU aid for border control improvements. The Adriatic state's entry to the EU in July was celebrated as a mark of recovery from years of war during the bloody collapse of Yugoslavia. But Croatia has quickly fallen into disagreement with its new peers over amendments to its extradition ...
