Indonesian Fires Reveal Unfulfilled Environmental Promises
Jul 1st 2013, 23:40, by webdesk@voanews.com (Brian Padden)

Singapore and Malaysia recently suffered through the worst air pollution crisis in 16 years, due mostly to slash-and-burn deforestation fires in Indonesia. The president of Indonesia has apologized and promised to investigate the cause, but  his public commitment to reduce pollution and protect the environment, at least in the short term, have not slowed the rate of deforestation. It's an annual occurrence in the dry season: a smoky, hazardous haze blankets southern Malaysia and ...

It's official. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents in a same-sex marriage to a foreign national can now sponsor their spouse for a family-based immigrant visa, according to a directive issued by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Monday. The move follows last week's Supreme Court decision ruling that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, defining marriage between a man and a woman, as unconstitutional. U.S. President Barack Obama has directed federal departments ...

Jul 1st 2013, 23:09, by webdesk@voanews.com (Dan Robinson)

President Barack Obama leaves Tanzania Tuesday for Washington, ending his week-long Africa trip focused on expanding U.S. trade and investment with Africa, and on democratization. Thousands of people lined Dar es Salaam's streets to welcome Obama and his family.  The Obamas walked off Air Force One into a bright, steamy day in Dar es Salaam, where they were welcomed by Tanzania's President Jakaya Kikwete, his wife and dignitaries. Cheers went up in the crowd that included women ...

Dozens Offer Input for South Sudan Constitution
Jul 1st 2013, 23:08, by webdesk@voanews.com (Simon Kasmiro)

From six-year-old girls seeking respect for children to adults advocating for pensions to be paid regularly to the elderly, dozens of South Sudanese turned out this weekend to tell the National Constitutional Review Commission what they would like to see included in the country's constitution. Rhoda Kuong, 6,  braved rainy season weather to come to the first meeting held by the commission to hear what South Sudanese want in their constitution. For the young girl, the main issue to ...

Three attacks north of the Iraqi capital have left at least 38 people dead, including at least 22 mourners at a Shi'ite funeral service for an Iraqi soldier. Authorities blamed the funeral attack in Muqdadiyah on a suicide bomber who set off explosives inside a packed Shi'ite religious hall. At least two dozen others were reported hurt. In nearby Baquba, a suicide bomber struck a cafe, killing at least eight people and wounding about 20 others. Earlier in the day, authorities say ...

European politicians have reacted angrily to claims that the U.S. National Security Agency has bugged European Union missions and tapped phone calls and e-mails. US Immigration Reform Faces Uncertain Future
Jul 1st 2013, 18:59, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jim Malone)

Supporters of immigration reform in the United States gained a victory last week when the Senate approved a bipartisan bill which tightens border security and sets out a lengthy path for citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.  But getting a bill through the Republican-controlled House will be a different story, says House Speaker John Boehner. "We are going to do our own bill through regular order, and it will be legislation that reflects the will of our majority and the ...

Colombian Peace Talks Resume in Cuba Amid Tensions
Jul 1st 2013, 20:49, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

The Colombian government and leftist FARC rebels clashed on Monday over how to incorporate Latin America's oldest guerrilla movement into the democratic process, as they began the latest round of peace talks in Havana. The FARC reiterated its demand that Colombia's 2014 general election be postponed a year in favor of a constituent assembly to chart the country's political future. The government has repeatedly rejected the proposal and insisted a peace agreement must be reached ...
