Cigarette Smuggling Suspects May Have Ties to Terrorists

New York authorities have arrested 15 men accused of running a cigarette smuggling ring and say some of the suspects may have ties to Islamic militant groups. Officials said Thursday the suspects allegedly smuggled more than one-million cartons of cigarettes from Virginia into New York, depriving the city and state of tax revenue. They say despite the lucrative scheme, the suspects lived modestly, raising suspicions that they were sending the money elsewhere. Authorities also say one of the ...

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield's music video has gone viral. In the popular video, Hadfield plays David Bowie's rock classic Space Oddity on his acoustic guitar and sings the lyrics about a space traveler. The real draw, beyond Hadfield's ability to play and carry a tune, is that he performed while floating weightless aboard the International Space Station, at times with a view of our planet out the window.        Hadfield, who recently wrapped up ...

Earth, Moon Share Water Source
May 16th 2013, 21:25

The Moon and Earth share the same source of water, according to new research. The latest analysis is based on new data collected by NASA spacecraft as well as the Moon rocks brought back by the Apollo missions. It shows that water inside the Moon's mantle comes from primitive meteorites, which also supplied most of the water on Earth. The research raises questions about the formation of the Moon. Prevailing theory holds that the moon was formed about 4.5 billion years ago from a disc of ...

Human rights and labor advocates are welcoming a joint agreement by clothing retailers and brand name companies that calls for improving conditions for garment factory workers in Bangladesh.  Western retailers, most of them European, agreed to the plan after a building housing garment factories in Dhaka collapsed last month, killing more than 1,100 people.  Some advocates, however, are concerned that efforts to improve working conditions in the country will fade as the Dhaka ...

Republican lawmakers and fiscally conservative Tea Party leaders are vowing to keep up the pressure on the White House to see if it was involved with the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative Tea Party groups for extra scrutiny.  Tea Party leaders say the IRS scandal confirms their worst fears about a federal government they see as too big and too powerful.  A large number of Republican members of Congress and Tea Party leaders from across the country gathered ...

Green Card Lottery Faces Elimination Under US Immigration Reform
May 16th 2013, 21:47

The popular Green Card Lottery program could be eliminated if the U.S. Congress passes the current version of the bipartisan immigration reform plan. The lottery was set up as a way to give anyone a chance at the "American dream." But the new plan will focus instead on adding more highly-educated workers in science, technology, engineering and math. Two years ago Rafiq-ul-Islam won a U.S. permanent resident visa through the Green Card Lottery and came to the United States from ...

Ultra-Orthodox Jews Protest in Jerusalem, Vowing to Defy Draft
May 16th 2013, 21:54

Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews protested in Jerusalem on Thursday against plans to enlist men from their community into the military, a proposal supported by the secular majority pushing for a more equal share of the burden on Israeli society.   A sea of black coats - the traditional attire of ultra-Orthodox men - engulfed Jerusalem streets near the city's military draft bureau where the crowd heard rabbis warn that army service would irreparably harm their way of life.   "The ...
