Afghan officials say a car bomb has killed at least seven people in the capital, Kabul, just hours after U.S. President Barack Obama left the city following an unannounced visit.
Kabul police say Wednesday's suicide car bombing was near Jalalabad road, the main road heading east from the capital. The attack apparently targeted a large heavily secured complex called the "Green Village" that houses hundreds of international workers.
Officials say the attack killed five civilians and a security guard. The seventh victim has not been identified. NATO said Afghan security forces have contained and killed all attackers.
NATO spokesman General Carsten Jacobson call the bombing "another desperate attack" that resulted in the deaths of "innocent Afghan civilians."
Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was in response to President Obama's visit. A statement from the Taliban announced that they will launch their spring offensive across Afghanistan on Thursday.
Witnesses heard at least one other explosion in the eastern part of the capital. Gunfire followed the blasts.
During Obama's quick visit, he signed the Strategic Partnership Agreement with his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai.
Meanwhile, NATO said a bomb attack killed two service members Wednesday in eastern Afghanistan.
