A U.S. lottery spokeswoman says at least one winning ticket for the record $640 million lottery was sold.
The spokeswoman said early Saturday the winning Mega Millions ticket was bought in Baltimore County, Maryland - just 60 kilometers north of Washington.
No information was immediately available on the lucky ticket holder, or if there are other winners.
The winner, or winners, can collect $462 million in one cash payment, or the full jackpot in yearly payments. The winnings are subject to state and federal taxes.
The dream of winning more than one-half billion dollars sparked lines at convenience stores across the 42 states, Washington and the U.S. Virgin Islands taking part in the Mega Millions lottery. The odds of matching all the lottery numbers are 1 in 176 million.
The record-setting jackpot grew to the largest in world history after no one matched the winning numbers in January, and 18 drawings later, there still was no winner.
