UN: Disarmament a Priority for Ivory Coast Peace
Jun 12th 2012, 11:42

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast - It has been one year since political violence formally ended in Ivory Coast, but at least 60,000 ex-combatants are still armed. The United Nations says it was a failure to disarm fighters from the 2002 -2003 civil war which helped fuel last year's conflict and the country cannot afford to make the same mistake again.  Chief of the U.N.'s DDR operation (disarmament, demobilization and reintegration) in Ivory Coast, Sophie Da Camara, says taking a weapon away ...

UN: N. Korea Aid Efforts 'Seriously Underfunded'
Jun 12th 2012, 11:57

The United Nations is calling for the international community to put aside political differences and boost funding to help address what it says are the dire humanitarian needs of North Koreans. The U.N. said Tuesday that aid efforts in North Korea remain "seriously underfunded," even as it unveiled a funding request for an additional $198 million to respond to "key humanitarian priorities" in the impoverished communist state in 2012. Burmese Troops on Patrol as Ethnic Violence Continues
Jun 12th 2012, 10:28

Armed security forces presided over an uneasy calm in western Burma Tuesday, as international pressure mounts for an end to a week of deadly violence between Muslims and Buddhists. President Thein Sein has already deployed army troops and declared a state of emergency in Rakhine state, where at least 17 people have been killed and hundreds of homes destroyed since last week. But rights groups fear the death toll may be significantly higher and are calling for Burma's government to ...

Jun 12th 2012, 05:54

While some Malawian opposition members have criticized President Joyce Banda for making what they call a hasty decision in canceling next month's African Union summit, one opposition leader said the decision is in Malawi's national interest.   The African Union decided Monday to move the July 9-16 summit to Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, after Banda refused to let Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, under indictment by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, to ...
