Typhoon Haikui has hit eastern China, the third such storm to make landfall there in a week. The storm came ashore in Zhejiang province early Wednesday bringing heavy rains and winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour. More than 1.5 million people were evacuated ahead of the storm, which is expected to hover over Zhejiang province for most of Wednesday. A founding member of Swaziland's banned opposition People's United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) party said Swazis expect King Mswati III to make meaningful democratic reforms rather than hold an insincere "people's parliament."  Tuesday, the king began a three-day people's assembly called the "sibaya" to allow Swazis to express their views about the country's current and future direction.  PUDEMO founding member Mphandlana Shongwe said his party will attend the assembly, although ...

Aug 7th 2012, 23:10

WHITE HOUSE — President Barack Obama is authorizing an additional $30 million in federal government help for drought-stricken U.S. farmers and ranchers. America's continued dry weather will likely affect food and fuel prices worldwide. The president met Tuesday with officials from several government departments to find ways to help U.S. food producers, who have been hit by a drought he calls "devastating" and "historic." Among the steps he is taking is to direct the Agriculture Department ...

Floods Cause Food, Water Shortages in North Korea
Aug 7th 2012, 23:44

A United Nations official overseeing international aid assistance in North Korea says current massive floods have caused shortages of food and clean water. Jerome Sauvage, the U.N.'s resident coordinator in North Korea, said the flood-stricken areas also need support for their health system.  But he said the floods may not have a long-term effect on food supply in the country. "We have to be careful, [but] we have not seen such widespread disaster in terms of sitting-water ...
