Strong Grassroots Support for Rebuilding Education in Conflict Countries
Jun 12th 2012, 21:46

Conflict is keeping nearly 28 million children around the world out of school. It's also led to poor quality schooling in camps for refugees and the internally displaced. Jun 13th 2012, 20:57

THE PENTAGON - U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says he is very concerned about the possibility of a major cyber attack that he says could paralyze U.S. government and financial systems.  The warning came as Panetta cautioned U.S. lawmakers against major cuts to the defense budget.    The Pentagon has already agreed to cut $450 billion from its budget over a period of ten years.  It faces an additional $500 billion in cuts under an automatic mechanism ...

Egyptian Villagers Debate Candidates' Economic Plans
Jun 13th 2012, 17:28

MAZOURA, Egypt - Egypt's economic stagnation was a key factor in the revolt against the old government. In one village, voters worried about their future are divided over which of the two presidential candidates could help them move forward.   Life in rural Egypt under the previous government was hard. Poverty was endemic - a third of Egyptians live on less than $2 a day. Prospects for change were almost nil. So the promise of new leadership has many in the countryside ...

NASA Launches Black Hole Hunter
Jun 13th 2012, 17:57

WASHINGTON - The U.S. space agency launched a telescope into space Wednesday that is designed to seek out and study black holes, those still-mysterious celestial bodies that scientists believe lie at the heart of every massive galaxy, including our own Milky Way. Their gravitational pull is so intense that not even light can escape from them. As gas, dust and stars are sucked in, the material accelerates and heats up, generating powerful X-ray light emissions.   To further study ...

CAPITOL HILL - The head of America's biggest bank has apologized for risky dealings that incurred a $2 billion loss - an unwelcome echo of the 2008 financial crisis that plunged the United States into the deepest recession of the post-World War II era.  JP Morgan Chase executive Jamie Dimon faced questioning from U.S. senators. It was four years ago that a cascading failure of America's biggest financial institutions triggered massive federal bailouts and legislation designed to curb ...

Jun 13th 2012, 15:06

GENEVA - The United Nations said African countries can avoid the mistakes of early-industrialized countries by growing their societies in an environmentally sound way.  A new UNCTAD report said African nations need to modernize by using their abundant natural resources in an efficient "green" manner.     The U.N. Conference on Trade and Development said industrialized nations have become rich by using the world's natural resources in a profligate manner, with little regard ...

Mali Rebels, Militants Clash in North
Jun 13th 2012, 17:25

Tuareg rebels and Islamist militants have clashed in northern Mali, just days after breaking off a brief alliance against the government. A local official in the city of Timbuktu said the two sides exchanged gunfire at a checkpoint on Wednesday, injuring at least two people. Parliament member Baba Haidara said the fighting began after Islamist militants with Ansar Dine demanded that Tuareg rebels with the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad (MNLA) lay down their ...
