Underprivileged Kids Get Free Prom Clothes
Jun 8th 2012, 14:15

LOS ANGELES - In the United States, when students graduate from high school, many celebrate that achievement by going to prom. It is a dance party where students dress up in formal gowns and tuxedos.  But not every student who wants to go can afford to dress for the occasion. Organizations across the United States provide free dresses and suits so students can go to prom.  A program called The Cinderella and Prince Charming Project allows teens from some of the roughest ...

Analysts: Low Cambodian Voter Turnout Blow to Opposition
Jun 8th 2012, 14:13

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia's ruling party won a landslide victory in local elections on June 3.  The poll was notable for a dip in voter turnout, which analysts said is a blow to the country's opposition parties. Some said it's an indication that the divided opposition needs to unite if it hopes to present a legitimate challenge in next year's national elections. Even prior to the commune (district subdivision) elections, the results were all but a forgone conclusion. As ...

Japan's PM Calls for Reopening of Nuclear Plant
Jun 8th 2012, 11:27

Japan's prime minister has called for the reopening of an idle nuclear plant, saying Japan cannot do without atomic energy. At a news conference Friday, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda called for all operations to resume at the Ohi nuclear plant in western Japan.  He said two reactors should be restarted to support people's lives, but stopped short of ordering such a move. Mr. Noda's government is desperately seeking to gain public support to restart the reactors to ...

Malawi Cancels AU Summit Over Bashir Controversy
Jun 8th 2012, 13:26

Malawi says it will not host an upcoming African Union summit, after the AU insisted on inviting Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted for war crimes. Speaking on state radio, Malawi Vice President Khumbo Kachali said the cabinet met Friday and decided not to host the summit.  He said ministers based their decision on "what is best in the interest of Malawians." A Malawian newspaper reported this week that authorities were prepared to arrest President ...

Activists Worry About Investor Interest in Burma
Jun 8th 2012, 12:29

Burma is under pressure to implement broad economic reforms as the country still catches up with recently significant political change. This has brought both excitement and concern over reviving an economy that was once a commercial hub for Southeast Asia. Reforms under President Thein Sein have largely ended the political and economic isolation that left Burma as one of the poorest nations in Southeast Asia.   But as investors and businesses look for opportunities, there remain ...

NASA to Launch Black Hole Hunter
Jun 8th 2012, 12:13

The U.S. space agency is set to launch a telescope into space June 13 to seek out and study black holes - those still-mysterious celestial bodies that scientists believe lie at the heart of every massive galaxy, including our own Milky Way.  NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array , or NuSTAR  will explore to see what it can find. The gravitational pull of black holes is so intense that not even light can escape from them. As gas, dust and stars are sucked in, the ...

Activists in the Philippines staged a protest outside the U.S. embassy in Manila Friday, ahead of President Benigno Aquino's meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington later in the day. The meeting at the White House is expected to include discussions on boosting security ties and increasing the number of U.S. troops in the Philippines.  The talks come amid rising tensions between the Philippines and China over a disputed area of the South China sea. But the ...
