Venezuela Expels Top US Diplomat for Fomenting 'Sabotage'
Sep 30th 2013, 23:50, by webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Monday he was expelling the top U.S. diplomat in the South American nation and two others, accusing them of meeting with opposition leaders and encouraging "acts of sabotage" against his country.   It was the latest of several public disputes between the socialist leader and the United States since Maduro won an April election following the death of his mentor and predecessor Hugo Chavez.   Maduro said Venezuelan authorities had for months ...

US Government Shutdown Q&A: Global Impact
Sep 30th 2013, 21:40, by webdesk@voanews.com (Kate Woodsome)

If the U.S. government shuts down on Tuesday, the world will keep on turning. But some government functions linking the United States to the rest of world will be affected, as will many domestic services. To better understand the crisis and its potential impacts, we've put together this primer. 1. How would a shutdown affect U.S.-global relations? Consular Operations: U.S. consular operations overseas will remain operational as long as there are sufficient funds to support them, according ...

Philippines Wins Accolades for Gender Equality; With Reservations
Sep 30th 2013, 20:11, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jason Strother)

The Philippines scores high in global surveys on gender equality. But some women there say the reports do not tell the whole story. Women make up a quarter of Philippine elected officials in both the Senate and House of Representatives. Lawmaker Senator Grace Poe, 45, says it is an accomplishment she feels proud of.   "In terms of our neighbors here in Southeast Asia or even in the world, the Philippines - when it comes to women in leadership positions - is doing very well," ...

UN Turns Attention to Syrian Aid Crisis

After unanimously adopting a resolution to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons, the United Nations Security Council is turning its attention to the country's dire humanitarian crisis. Australian U.N. Ambassador Gary Francis Quinlan, who also is the outgoing president of the Security Council, said Monday he expects the Council this week to urge Syrian authorities to allow immediate access for desperately needed humanitarian aid. Currently, the Syrian government only allows 12 ...

Iranian President Faces Backlash Over US Visit
Sep 30th 2013, 20:52, by webdesk@voanews.com (Jamie Dettmer)

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani may have made a favorable impression on many in the West during his visit to the United Nations last week, but some of his country's hardline military leaders were not at all pleased with the trip. The way they see it, Rouhani should have refused to talk by telephone with U.S. President Barack Obama on the last day of his stay in the United States. In an interview with an Iranian news-site, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of Iran's powerful ...

Typhoon Wutip has hit Vietnam after sinking three Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and leaving dozens of fishermen missing. China's official news agency, Xinhua, said Monday that 74 fishermen are still unaccounted for, after their boats were lost near the Paracel Islands on Sunday. It said rescuers have retrieved 14 survivors. Wutip was downgraded to a tropical storm when it made landfall on Vietnam Monday evening. African Union Pushing for More Intercontinental Trade
Sep 30th 2013, 21:18, by webdesk@voanews.com (Marthe van der Wolf)

Both the African Union and the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) have held countless meetings and conferences on increasing intra-Africa trade. Efforts so far, however, have not translated into results.   How intra-Africa trade can be improved is one of the most discussed topics at the AU and UNECA. African countries do only 11 percent of their foreign trade with other countries on the continent. In comparison, Asian countries do 50 percent of their trade with each other, while ...
