Washington Area Storm Knocks Out Power to 1.5 Million Homes Jun 30th 2012, 10:45 A wave of violent storms has hit the U.S. capital area, plunging 1.5 million homes and businesses into darkness with the loss of electricity. The fierce weather late Friday night uprooted trees and blew off some roofs.  Broken tree branches littered the streets in Washington and surrounding suburban neighbors in Maryland and Virginia.  Many homes were damaged by fallen trees.
