A powerful earthquake has hit off the east coast of Taiwan, but there have been no reports of casualties. The U.S. Geological Survey the 6.0-magnitude quake hit early Sunday about 50 kilometers east of the town of Su-ao. On Wednesday a quake of about 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted eastern Taiwan. Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. But a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,000 people.
